Our ideas have changed dramatically on this issue. We're finally getting close to an answer though. Let's do some history.
It was originally assumed the universe was infinite and had no edge.
With the rise of the big bang theory, we now knew the universe was finite.
It was assumed that do to the speed of light, the visible universe must be about 28 billion lightyears across. This was the most common assumption for many many years.
With the rise of the inflation theory, we thought the universe was larger than 28 billion ly, but did not know how large the universe is.
We now think the universe is about 156 billion year lights across, give or take a few billion, based on a lot of data.
However, we're probably still not there yet. It is thought the universe could be much larger than that even.

The universe is approximately 28 billion light years across.
If it were infinite like these other morons were saying, that would insinuate no beginning, no Big Bang Theory.

It's bigger than u can imagine. Think of the size of the sun.. it's many many many times bigger in real than when we look at it from earth. But the sun is just a small little star in the universe.

The universe is as big as your mind....
If you use only 10% of your brain and 90% of that is unexplored, how much of the universe will be known to you if you don't explore 90% of it?......

infinite.
Look at it like this, if the universe has a size then it must have physical boundaries. Soi whats at the edge of the universe? what stops you going further? and whats beyond the boundary's of the universe?
None of those questions can be rationally answered, therefore the universe has no size, no boundaries etc etc....
Its just infinite

a few months ago scientists recomputed the size of the universe, based on the latest finds, and the current approximation of the size of the universe is 150,000,000,000 light years across.

the observable universe is about 28 billioin light years across, but only because of the limitation of lightspeed on observation. the entire universe is still potentially infinite, I believe.
