not a gay reference. American street slang.
The term 'Homeboy' means: friend . It was common street terminology back in the 1980's.
One would say, "Whassup, homeboy?!" The other would say, "Yo, wassup, homie."
While an educated person would say, "Hello, friend!" And the other would say, "Hi."

I never heard of it having a 'gay connection.' It usually means the guys you hang with in your neighborhood. Also called 'Homies.'

home boys are people from your home room; the room to which a class of secondary-school students must report at specific times each day

None that I know of. It's a sort of referance to your pack, the social group you're relating yourself with.
You don't actually have to know the people though, hence the wicked T-shirt "Jesus is my hommie"
