I'm a RN so it is important to follow your usual medical regimen but there are aditional things that you can do to help relax the bronchioles and bronchial tube. If you don't have your nebulizer handy, a cup of hot coffee will help to relax your bronchial tube by breathing in the steam as you sip the coffee as well as by the warm fluid passing down your esophagus. Also when experiencing an attack at home, sit beside a vaporizer/steamer and this will ease your breathing. Visualization and meditation is also helpful. When asthma strikes, close your eyes, breathe deeply three times and imagine yourself relaxed beside a pine tree. Then breathe in the aromatic fragranceof the pine. As you breathe out, feel the exhalation spread throughout your body down to the soles of your feet. After 3 to 5 minutes of this exercise, open your eyes and breathe easily. Some people have found that breathing over a plate of sliced onions is beneficial in opening up the bronchial tube. When the onion slices begin to dry out, just slice some more. Yoga breathing exercises are helpful to strengthen and relax your breathing muscles, which reduces nerve activity in your airways, helping them to constrict less during an asthma attack. To treat difficult breathing, try drinking hot cinnamon tea. You can purchase tea bags containing cinnamon. Progressive relaxation exercises are also helpful to reduce anxiety and ease tightness in the breathing muscles. The natural remedies that I have previously suggested may provide you some adjunct relief when used in conjunction with medical care including your doctor's approval. See your medical doctor immediately if you have severe difficulty breathing or are experiencing an asthma attack that you cannot control. Good luck to you.

Chinese medicine applies holistic approaches for asthma patients, and believes that prevention is essential during maintenance including:
Pay attention to environmental influences such as weathers; because they can trigger asthma exacerbations. Keep away from stimulations that cause asthma exacerbation such as smoke and pollens. Stay on a simple, healthy diet. Avoid eating raw, cold, greasy or pungent food. Also avoid eating shrimps or crabs. Get adequate rest. Avoid exhaustion and mental stress because they can trigger asthma. Exercise daily to keep a healthy and strong body; avoid getting a cold or the flu.

There's an herb (a weed) called mullein. It grows just about everywhere. If you look it up you'll probably recognize it. You can dry it and make tea out of it, or actually smoke the leaves. It helps asthma and respiratory infections. I don't have asthma, so I don't have any personal experience with that. I have used the tea for difficulty breathing with upper respiratory infections, though, and it works. I haven't tried smoking it.
