In Royal Etiquette Americans are never required to bow or curtsie. This was decided a number of years ago. No disrespect or offense is taken by the Royals. However it is still proper to address the Queen as Your Majesty.

A nod of the head would probably suffice. Even Tony Blair's wife doesn't curtsy, as a show of her left-wing views. The queen joked that when she enters a room she can sense Cherie Blair's spine stiffen. When the queen went to a baseball game in 1991 and met the players, only Reggie Jackson had the class to take his cap off when he met her.

Incidentally at one of the London Olympics (1948?) the flag bearers of each country dipped their flags as they passed the king - except for the American. So it's not even a case of 'when in Rome'.

In Rome...do as the Romans do ....so they say. If I was in England and was in the presence of the queen i would certainly curtsie out of respect. If she were here in the states, I would extend my hand to shake it, and tell her is is a pleasure to meet here.

It used to be that we were supposed to, according to *their* rules. But do Americans really care about British rules? Um, I think the Revolutionary War tell us the answer is no.

Probably as a result of the fact that Americans never actually did it, the British changed the rules, and it is no longer required to bow and curtsie.

One person who definitely never would have is George W. Presidents always refuse to bow to the Queen and she's never complained about it that I know of!

It would be respectful to do so, but not just to the queen herself. You would be showing respect to her country. If Tony Blair came over though, you could just laugh at him and run away.

Technically, no, as, although she is head of state, she does not hold that position in the US. However, it is the polite thing to do.
QEis a pretty good old gal, however, and unlike her illustrious ancestor, won't lop off your head if you don't bow it down.

no, it's only been the other way around

Elizabeth has developed friendships with many foreign leaders, including Nelson Mandela, Mary Robinson and George H. W. Bush, whose son, George W. Bush, was the first American president in more than 80 years to stay at Buckingham Palace.

you are not required to but to follow in with our traditions and relations with each others country it is always polite to follow protocol to show good intentions, but like someone before me, not even tony Blaire's wife courtesy's as protocol says to do so. it is mostly a sigh of respect.

According to Miss Manners (who should know), it is actually INCORRECT to bow to someone who isn't your country's royalty.

Bowing is acknowledging that person's rule over you, which no king or queen has over Americans.

We do not bow to anyone. Wave, smile, nod, but no bowing. This is not "The King and I" with Yul Brynner.
