Some episodes he's in it, some episodes he's gone and the mom fancies the principle, and no one ever mentions him. But I've never seen what happened. Did they get divorced or did he die?

Wow, I had no idea he died in real life, I thought he'd just left the show. Not sure how I missed that. Maybe it didn't get as much press in the UK? I have seen him in a lot of other things and he was great, that's a real shame.

I am afraid he died in real life so they also had to let him go that way in the series too. They did do many episodes of his death and coping with it and is why grandad and uncle were also brought in to series. Some times they do show old shows when he was alive and then the ones without him in so is confusing.

Thank you for asking this question! I have been wondering the same thing. I watch it quite reguarly on abc and one minute he was there and in the next episode that followed straight after he wasn't and everyone was sad!
Finally an explanation - cheers! Didn't realise he died in real life, such a shame.

Ritter was rushed from the set of the ABC series "8 Simple Rules for Dating My Teenage Daughter" to Providence St. Joseph Medical Center in Burbank, California, after suffering from aortic dissection, an unrecognized and undetected flaw in his heart, according to a statement from his publicist Lisa Kasteler.

Unfortunately John Ritter collapsed and died of a heart attack in 2003 at the ABC studioes. He was only 54. Really makes me angry, people going before their time. RIP John.
