Nick c..thanks for calling me a bad parent. the reason that I posted this question is so my son can read all the good advice that everyone else has put, I have tried talking to my son to explain that mixing alcohol is not good and can cause more damage..but what child listens to good advice..I asked this question so my son can read what everyone (exept you )had written and see that my advise is the same as everyone else.

My son is not stupid or an alcoholic..he just wanted to know if he stopped his tablets before the party if it would have an effect on him...he has never taken any medication for any illness or ever had any operations and never taken codeine before and doesnt even take a painkiller for a headache..the people at this party knows of his operation and will not encourage him to drink..HE IS NOT AN ALCOHOLIC...he just wondered if 1 beer would have any effect, he never drinks and drives and can't remember the last time he was drunk...the codeine doesnt say anything on the box and was given to me by a nurse who answered many questions that we asked, we didnt ask about alcohol as my son is not a drinker and we didnt think the question was relevent at the time

No.1 - he should definetly avoid potentially smokey attmospheres as the wounds will not be healed yet and so are still prone to infections (some of which can cause serious permenant damage his larinx (voice box) and impair his speech).
No.2 - No he should not drink (alcohol) with codeine and paracetamol as it can cause prolonged liver and kidney damage depending on the amount of units he consumes. It can also lead to blackouts and sometimes seizures. These all depend on his size too.
I seriously suggest he does not drink alcohol for at least 4 weeks following an operation of this kind especially with the follow up prescription medication he has been given.
Hopefully he can enjoy halloween without damaging himself to much.

your son should be avoiding crowds for two weeks as this will make him more vunerable to infection. Drinking alcohol with paracetamol and codeine is NOT advised.
Drinking alcohol will also depress his immune system, therefore not allowing his body to use it's potential in recovery.
19 year olds often lack the ability to stop drinking at an acceptable level and if your son vomits (sounds extreme but happens often!!) he could cause a bleed and then have to be re admitted.
Hope this helps.
Bear in mind that all indivivduals are different and he may go to the party, have a lovely time and be fine!
But no kissing - due to infection!!!!

The important thing would be for your son to drink so much that the negative effects of the medication really wouldn't matter because the alcohol poisoning would have reached a whole new level.
Anyway, when I was 19, if my Mother told me I couldn't go out, I would have been unconscious in a pool of my own vomit by 9pm- especially if there was any kind of personal risk. That's what being 19 is all about.

Ibuprofen and paracetamol can certainly be taken together. There is little to commend the use of Migraleve, which is basically very expensive sugar coated co-codamol ! Codeine is a poor analgesic adding no more than 5% to the efficacy of simple paracetamol alone. It has significant side effects, ironically these include headache and abdominal pain, it is also quite addictive and very constipating.

I know what 19 years olds are like but he could have probems if he goes against the doctors advice!
The main reason is infection. The bed of the tonsils will not have healed properly yet, it is still raw and if it becomes infected (lots of people equals lots of bacteria) it could cause a massive problem and he could have serious bleeding as a result. Also it take s awhile for the body to get over the anaesthetic and alcohol really wont do him any good.
I know he'll probably call you a killjoy but he really shouldn't go!

The answer is no. Paracetamol especially is not good to be taken together with drinking. The body have a chemical in liver that helps change chemical structure for some biochemical reason. This same chemical is being utilized to rid of the alcohol too. If you take a lot of alcohol, it will use up these chemicals hence you will upset the metabolism of panadol. This results in accumulation of toxic form of panadol which can cause liver damage.

Alcohol thins the blood...if he injures the area more likely bleed more. Defo NO drinking with codeine! Very, very, very bad idea. Unless he wants to risk ending up in the ER getting his stomache pumped and drinking a nice charcoal cocktail.
His surgeon would likely not have done the surgery had he known this young person would not have complied to the aftercare especially if this person was going to mix those meds with alcohol. Son needs to grow up and be responsible! Stay home, follow doctor's orders and he should not be putting you through the stress of saying he is gonna do those things. Where is dad in all of this to sort him out.

However much he is looking forward to it, he should really NOT go to this party. His resistance threshold to infection is lessened at the moment. Going would also induce him to join in and drink, which ,on his present medication, would be catastrophic in more ways than one as the interaction between alcohol and these drugs is extremely powerful. Even one drink could send him senseless and if he is driving he risks killing himself and others.
Nineteen years old think they are mature and know better, so I suggest you show him all these posts which may make him understand he is taking very serious risks.
There will be plenty of opportunities for other parties at a more suitable date later.

Fran I can understand he wants to party and having tonsils out at any age is not nice however to have them out when older is more dangerous.
Codeine is a strong drug and it needs to do its work I would advise agains any drink except for soft at the moment and also he needs to be careful with crowds and a smokey atmosphere all that will agrevate his throat. To have tonsils out at his age they must have been bad Fran as they do not do that op at that age lightly.
Tell him he can go to party but not drink, my daughter 21 was so ill last week I dragged her to doctor and she had severe chest infection given antibiotics and where was she later that night the pub but she promised she did not drink she just needed to go out. I honstyly do think it is to soon for him but at that age they know best. lol

NO !! they might be the run of the mill tablets but mixed with alcohol they could turn very dangerous, I had a friend who went into a sort of coma some years ago, it turned out OK after a few days at hospital but he will not try it again, he only took a couple for a head ache before going out
