well... the way would be to engineer microbes that can eat explosives, and render them into harmless, or at least stable recess.

but there are of course two major problems connected with that.
for one, most modern explosives are not from the realm of organic materials... and it will probably be impossible to breed a microbe that can digest them. at least for quite some time.
ans secondly, you still have to get the microbes to the ordinances... that is INSIDE their housings, shells, or whatever they are employed in. quite difficult to do on a selfsustaining level, i.e. without injecting every single device directly.

maybe the nanites idea is the better shot... but in my opinion we are even further from accomplishing that than we are from breeding a bug that feeds off C-4 or semtex.
