Story telling allows the speaker to elaborate or add deatail to the story.

Important facts in the story are recitied in eache retelling and are therefore better remembered because of the effect of practice on memory.

When you tell about something you have to interpret the ideas in a way that your audience will understand - this involves more complicated thinking and enhaces your memory of the story facts and allows for more thought and conclusions to drawn about the concepts nad ideas presented in the story.

Story telling was the primary way humans learned and passed on our history, methods and beliefs from one generation to the next before peole could read and write and printing methods allowed for cheap and easy dupilcation of documents.
