One week before your period and one week after your period is your ovulation cycle. So,that means without the protection, you can have sex one week before and one week(including your period time)after.

There are tests out now that can predict when you will ovulate, simple tests, the same as pregnancy tests.
I don't know if your trying to conceive or trying not to?
Generally, in the books they say that you ovulate between 14-17 days after the first day of your period. This is in a perfect world because everyone is different. If your trying to use this method as birth control...DON'T! You may ovulate at ten days, you may ovulate at 20 days, everyone is different. When you are ovulating you may notice extra discharge, if you've had unprotected sex the day before you could get pregnant. If you are trying to get pregnant, then just follow your cycle, any of the 15 days after your cycle could be fertile. If you are trying and you get frustrated month after month, get an ovulation predictor. If your trying to NOT get pregnant, use protection, there really are no certain days that are safe!
The safest would be the days right before you know you are going to start your period. Don't think that the days right after your period are safe, I have a ten year old to prove that theory wrong!!

I'm guessing your a young lady and have no female friends or relatives to help you with this info, otherwise why ask it?
You know your flow has started, that's quite apparent. Start a calander for yourself and start with the first day of the flow. Go to the end and then continue the second month. It's that easy. It should continue every month about the same time, some women are very exact, some are within a day or two. Some can tell be cramps they get, this doesn't mean all get these cramps. There are meds off the shelf you can take to help.
Ask you local doctor for help. If you've started your flow for the first time your going to need other advise also.
