Easy to read style, like Stephen King. I don't want to read a book I need to read with a dictionary. An unpretentious writing style so the writer is telling me a story, not showing me what a wonderful command of English he has.

I like a story which touches on things we think about but which are extraordinary but possible, like psychic links between identical twins or someone who can see spirits like Odd in Dean Koontz novels.

I like something that breaks taboos, like a story I read about a struggling prositiute trying to raise her young son moving from place to place and as the son passed puberty he started sleeping with mum in every sense.

I like stories I can identify with, like about where I live now or where I grew up. I like hero's who are old fashioned gentleman detectives or very accomplished but clever too like the hero Riddick in the Vin Diesel movies.

A must read for me could be a modern Mata Hari story, perhaps about a female Iraqi agent seducing information out of high ranking USA Pentagon and White House staff. It has current events, sex, violence, intrigue, skill, daring and many more hooks to make a reader buy it.
