Goa pronunciation (help·info) (Konkani: गोंय goṃya; Marathi: गोवा govā) is India's second smallest state in terms of area (after Delhi) and the fourth smallest in terms of population (after Sikkim, Mizoram and Arunachal Pradesh). It is located on the west coast of India, in the region known as the Konkan, and is bounded by the state of Maharashtra to the north, and Karnataka to the east and south. The Arabian Sea bounds it to the west. Panaji(Panjim) is the state's capital, and Vasco-da-Gama (Vasco) its largest city. The second largest and most historic city is Margao with the most western Portuguese culture. Portuguese merchants first landed in Goa in the 15th century, and annexed it soon after. The Portuguese colony existed for about 450 years, until it was successfully taken over by India in 1961

If you are going to GOA only you're not seeing INDIA, you're seeing GOA. Expect to pay high prices for taxi (They don't go anywhere for less than a hundred Indian rupees) while low prices for beer (50), food and hotel. It's an beach town resort like you can find pretty much anywhere. Disco's are open late 6 AM every day unless there's elections. Beaches are fine yes, water's not. Lots of open bars, restaurants and handicraft/clothing shops just about anywhere. Like other people said, GOA is no culture shock, at all. It's not even to be compared with India. It's NOT. People exactly speak English here! Actually, as I've been to Agra, Delhi and several other cities so far I'm not liking GOA so much. If you're up for an adventure, book an train to the unknown! If you want to stay safe, enjoy restaurants, nightlife, beaches, perhaps some island stay and enjoy your time in GOA!

Goa, one of the smallest states in India's map, with a territory of 3,702 sq km is located in the Western Ghats.

A tropical paradise, it is bathed by the warm waters of the Arabian Sea. Goan culture is a blend of Indian and Iberian: European style central squares and Indian bazaars, Portuguese churches sharing their walls with Hindu temples.

Christianity and Hinduism exist side by side in this state. Having been ruled by the colonial Portuguese for over 450yrs, there is still a distinctive European flavor that has permeated all aspects of Goa's life including its food, religion, language, festivals, dances and names.

Apart from the increasing strength of Indian tourists from outside Goa, a large number of western tourists also arrive using the direct-chartered flights to Goa.

Goa is best known for its spectacular beaches and luxurious hotels but there are many old churches, monuments, temples and museums, that are a must see.
