America is the continent. (North, Central and South (i.e., Mexico...Estados Unidos de Mejico (United States of Mexico). Most countries are devided into different states, provinces, departments... Anyone who is from the american continent is american. Like anyone from the European countries are europeans, or from the Asian...or African continents... Correct me... if I'm incorrect, but it seems every country has a name. What about the so refered as the United States of what name??? The country between Canada and the Estados of Mejico> United States of Mexico; I guess one could refer to Mexico as the U.S.M .
This is not to upset anyone...it's just an observation...and somewhat a little wonder.... I'm amazed on how people get so defensive on so little...

It all started with our Declaration of Independence.

Once they broke with Britain, all we had were States. There was no single country. That was created first by the Articles of Confederation and later the Constitution.

After the Constitution, there were still States, but they were now associated with each other, and referred to collectively as the united States of America.

The reason there is no more specific name for the country than that is that the States were sovereign. To have a separate name other than the description "united States" would be to indicate that the federal government created the states, when the reverse is true.

The United States of America. That would be the name of the country. It is located in North America, the continent. Also, just because you live on the "American continent" does not mean you are American. Americans come from the USA. Canadians come from Canada, Mexicans come from Mexico, Guatemalans come from Guatemala... I could go on. Have you never taken geography or history?

The inhabitants of what you refer to as the so-called U.S.A are simply unique people who love unity and their own selves. They are not divisive by nature, although history has it that they have once been extremely segregative of the Afro-Americans. It is this self love that has made them not think of dividing the huge U.S.A into units that they can name countries and give them different names according to the ethnicity of the inhabitants of the these units. As history has it that most of the current nationals of the U.S.A. are belived to be criminals who were rejected in Britain and other European countries by banishment, it is no doubt that they are birds of the same feathers. However, a christian person is likely to endorse my presupposition that the best friends ever are persons who have once been hateful people, that like to harbour inside them all kinds of malicious grudges and other iniquities. The eminent reason is that the U.S.A nationals are people bound by incredible love of humanity, regardless of the political slogans said that are meant to shatter such a nation. No country that can deliver good service to the world the way the U.S.A can do! I am only speaking my mind and not inflammed by politics.

North America is the name of the continent. The United States of America IS the name of our country. When people say America, they associate that name with the U.S.. When they say "North America" they understand they are talking about the continent.
