I agree that you can't MAKE a baby sleep through the night, but you can try to help depending on the baby's age. I read that if you have a routine which you do daily before bed time it helps. Also giving the baby a warm bath before bedtime, another thing is to give him a good filling meal (if he is the age where he eats solids). Ask your pediatrician if you can add some rice cereal to his last bottle. Also don't let him take too many naps during the day, and if he takes naps during the day keep the room well lit so that he knows the difference between a nap and his night sleep.

Try this site, it might help:

Somewhat unfortunately you don't MAKE a baby do anything (They certainly have minds of their own!!)

We found though that by keeping a VERY strict bedtime ritual our baby slept wonderfully.

Right since day one we'd play music at naptimes and put on a heartbeat sound through the night. The baby learned the difference, knew what it meant when the different sounds were playing and did exactly what she had to do from about 3 weeks. She'd sleep for 1-2 hours with the music and 8-10 with the heartbeat.

NEVER play the night sound during the day though or it screws everything up... we brought the heartbeat sound to a babysitter's during the day once knowing that it got her to sleep and it took us a few nights to undo THAT mistake.

How old is your baby? They start to sleep through the night as they get older and are ready. Some things that help for an older baby is to make sure they are fed, dry and comfortable. Also many moms let their babies sleep with an old sleep shirt of theirs or something like that so that the baby feels that you are near and this security can help them stay asleep longer. Good luck!

I have to disagree with a lot of postes here. It is possible for a baby to be trained to sleep through the night. Keeping them up and awake for the day will encourage them to sleep at night as they will be more tired, not giving them much attention when they wake at night also helps. Just feed change and back to bed, (even if it has to be your own bed) Feed a filling meal before bed...or feed a bottle just before bed so the baby is full, and bathing does help before bed as well. My daughter is seven weeks old and is now sleeping 5-6 hours at a time, and even if she sleeps all day she is never up for more then half an hour during middle of the night, because its all business when its time for her to sleep at night, and she probably senses that so doesnt even bother.

You don't!! I have four children and all were different. A good night time routine and not pandering during the night helped but your little baby has a personality that you will understand as he/she gets older. Don't worry, keep things on an even keel and it will all balance out. My Children 17,10,6,4 slept through once I discovered what made them comfortable, believe me there is no secret formula, no child is the same as another! Best of luck.

As has been said before it really does depend on the age of your baby. I have read loads about this cos my first child really didnt sleep through the night until he was 3!!!
The only way to do it is to figure out why he/she is waking up, to do this you have to instill a very strict routine, this sounds harsh but then you will start to recognise different crys and reasons for the baby waking.
I really suggest getting the baby whisperer book as I watched all of her series and it really did shed light on a few things I was doing wrongly.
here is the link on amazon -http://www.amazon.co.uk/Secrets-Baby-Whisperer-Connect-Communicate/dp/0091857023

Hopefully this will help.....

most babies specially 1-2 months old doesn't do much sleeping at night at all but during the day time they get a good sleep.but what you should do just make sure your baby is not hungry and wet he wont bother you while you rest and it's good if you also let daddy share the shifting on night time .for sure you both will enjoy the feeling of parenthood.

Let me know when you know the answer!!!!!!! lol

My baby is 7 1/2, he was sick and now he's waking up twice in the middle of the night.

Before that I was trying to make him stop by giving him a bottle with water instead of formula, the Book Baby 411 says they will stop waking up once the figure there is no point in waking up since they are not getting any nutrition at night.

Instead he ended up taking pedialyte! I just feel bad trying it while he is sick. But their suggestion about how to train them to go to sleep in their crib worked great.
