What do people think of Torchwood? Most Sci-Fi fans will be familiar with the film Species; which the second episode rather ripped off. Was there too much sex in it though? Dr Who has manged to be exciting with barely any sex in it for years. It may affect the programme's chances of success in the conservative American marketplace too

Lucky ol' reaper420! I have never had a girlfriend who'd want to watch sci-fi with me!

and, don't worry, bazzabags, not offended just surprised. It was like all the sex they never showed on Dr Who was shown on Torchwood!

Yes, I felt the 'adult content' was a bit gratuitous, as if they were desperately screaming 'look, this is for grown ups'!
And the plot, such as it was, was very derivative.
I found the whole thing a bit of a curates egg. But it's early days, I'll stick with it a while.

Given (a) the audience it was aimed at (adults) and (b) the writer (Russell T. Davies creator of Queer As Folk) it's not surprising that there was sex in it. By making an obvious statement in the first few episodes (namely, these character do have sex) it makes it clear from the outset what kind of programme it's going to be, it makes it clear that it's not for kids. There's going to be sex, violence and swearing.
So what if Dr Who has survived without sex for all those years, that's a completely different programme aimed at a different audience.
As for the conservative Americans, who cares if they don't like it? Who cares if it's a success in America? It's a UK programme. Anyway, the sex will be the least of their worries, can you imagine some slack-jawed Texan trying to understand the Welsh accent?!

Torchwood was great. very funny and very sexy. what's wrong with having sex in an adult show? Dr Who was a family show after all.
Everyone where i work is talking about Torchwood, it's a hit! i hope the show carries on being funny, scary, smart, intelligent and above all human! It makes a glorious change from all those oh sincere, so serious US shows (Is Battlestar Galactica boring or what?). Who cares about conservative America disapproving, the rest of the world can enjoy it if they don't.

its a post watershed programme so i dont see the problem. Dr Who is a family show, Torchwood is more of the same but for grownups! Sci fi has been too clean cut for decades now, its about time adult themes in the genre are explored, in time it will be no more contraversial than Kirk kissing Uhura was in the 60's
In comparison to Russell T Davis' Queer as Folk, its tame (and that sold fantastically in America)

Personally, I think it would have been just as good - if not better - without the sex (which I found rather incongruous and almost funny). As in Doc Who, the sexiest bit is actually the chemistry between the 2 main characters. It will ruin it if they start bonking in chapter 3.

I'm sorry but if you read the write ups of Torchwood you would have known that it was "Very adult based"
I myself enjoyed the program and didn't really pay attention to sex scenes in the program as it was actually "vital" to the whole storyline.
So i'm sorry if you were offended by these scenes why did you carry on watching it?????????

We all know they cannot keep their hands off each other in Dr Who, just as soon as the cameras stop rolling they are at it, and that is how sci fi sex should be, implied not graphic

Too much sex??!! There was hardly any! I think you're being a bit of a prude....you didn't even see a pair of boobs in it, just a glimpse of cleavage! Personally, I don't think there was ENOUGH sex it it! And America is hardly conservative is it - look at Sex in the City and Desperate Housewives!! Lighten up - this is 2006!

I was excited about the new series but now its here, I could take it or leave it. Too much like Dr Who with pointless 'naughtiness' (hardly call it sex!). Bit of eye candy tho! ;O)

Dr Who was aimed at a family audience.
Torchwood is aimed at at an adult audience.
As for the sex, it was hardly graphic.
PS:
Much more sex in Buffy, Angel, Firefly, Galactica, Alias, Stargate (Pilot Episode was Cert 18 because of frontal nudity) etc & they were all US produced hits.
