Hi,

I think if your are not ready for credit card, and the main purpose is just to use it for online buying, i think DEBIT CARD is better. With this you can buy things from internet, and use it like normal credit card. but the amount you spend will directly deduct from your account (something like nets). Thats means if you have no / not enough money in your account you can not buy / spend. you may try DBS debit card now come with free 1 or 2 years membership.
call them to get more information.

I believe Visa is a card that can be used worldwide.

There are four types of cards you could get:

A debit card associated with a checking account (even if you open a separate account just for this purpose). These are called "check cards" sometimes and have a Visa logo. There is usually no fee for using these cards.

A secured credit card (or partially secured card) that has a low limit, probably a high interest rate on anything you don't pay as soon as the bill with the purchase comes in. It could be a Visa or Mastercard.

An unsecured beginner card with a low credit limit and sometimes higher interest rate (but, again, the interest rate only matters if you don't pay off what you charge in a month as soon as the bill comes in). these often have an annual fee for as long as the account is open.

A "regular" card from a bank like Citibank or Chase. These are for people with good credit and a certain income but often have very low interest rates.

With any card there is often "fraud protection" which means you wouldn't be held liable for things charged to the card once you've reported the card lost or stolen. There may be other fraud protections in place as well in the event someone were able to get your account numbers and make online purchases.

These days cards have a number on the back, and online merchants often ask you what that is in order that you prove you have the card in your possession. There are also "smart cards" which have readers that allow you not to give out any numbers at all. These "smart cards" are offered by the larger banks.

While the bigger banks with the better cards that have higher limits may offer better fraud protection there is often fraud protection with the other cards as well. The lower the limit on the card the less likely someone can run up the balance because the card would be declined.

You can also just get a debit card that is not associated with your checking account at all. You can find debit cards by searching "debit cards" online. These are cards that only the amount of money you have deposited into the card account (rather than in your checking account), so you could, say, put $500 into your debit-card account, and that would be the limit. Most of these require a certain amount of deposit (not much, as far as I know). These cards may also have other fees, so make sure you read the terms and conditions to see what other fees there may be.

For the record, Visa has the maximum number of cards in circulation, hence it is widely accepted. But MasterCard is just as good. I am yet to see a retailer who accepts Visa but not MasterCard.
All Credit Card companies protect the user against identity theft. But for your own safety, i would suggest you go for a Credit Card with a very low credit limit....say a max of 1000 USD...that should get you through most small online purchases, and you can be sure that, even in the most remote case, your maximum liability is not more that 1000 $.

Note:Debit Cards are never accepted online...Eg: Visa Electron ,is a Debit Service provided by Visa.Online Vendors do not accept it.

I don't know where the person is coming from that said debit cards aren't accepted online..... that is absolutely NOT TRUE!!

I don't use credit cards, I don't have any.
I live on a "cash only" basis (meaning if I don't have the money for something, i don't get it until I do).

I use a debit card for online purchases all the time. I have a debit card, it's Visa, specifically FOR online purchases, because I am primarily homebound and shopping from home is the easiest for me.

I recommend either a debit card, or a prepay credit card. That way you won't get yourself in debt trouble. It's easy to do, even for the best intentioned.

The only place you can get a good answer for your question is from the bank which you will be requesting the card from. as for cards both Visa card and Master card are the best and they are the most porpuler credit cards in the world.
You are sure of getting the best services from them. So i will surgest you see the customer care depertment of the bank where you have your account so that they will tell you so much more about credit cards.

This was exactly what i did when i needed a credit card and it worked..
