Hi;

I would like to know if it is possible to have a batch file which when run it automatically maps the user login(profile) to the correct microsoft exchange server to avoid going through the setup wizard in Microsoft Outlook.

For example. I am a new starter and have not logged onto a Pc before. I would run the batch file which will map my user ID to the correct exchange server, this will then close and then I can open Outlook.

Does anybody know if this is possible please?

Get the office resource kit and generate an Outlook profile file (.prf file). I believe the tool is called the Outlook Profile Generator. You can instruct the .prf file to populate the Exchange server name (does not matter which one, just provide any one in the org and it'll resolve the user) and the user login name based on whoever is logged in. Then place that executable as a short-cut on all of the user desktops so the user can simply click it and it'll automatically build the profile for them. Takes a bit of fiddling to get the file worked up but once it's there, it works like a charm.

Once you have the .prf file created you can write a batchfile that calls it upon user login. To get even more effective, you could start the batchfile with an IfExist statement to check the user's home directory for a tag file--- basically an empty text file with whatever name you want to give it--- if it is not found, the batchfile moves on to running the .prf file, then as a final step creates that tag file. That way users do not have to have a new profile generated at each login.

It is entirely possible, yes. If Microsoft stopped the use of Adm inistrator Batch Files, it cannot be done, or if the Sys Administrator cloed access to any new Batch Files, a security reccomendation, then it cannot be done. But an automated process could be stored on a Removable Media, CD,Tape,HDD then hash coded,encrypted, and use PGP keys to access it.
Once you are Logged in, run the file that will allow the access points that you require.
User Name is Username
Password is PassWord.
