Intel

Your processor doesn't have much to do with how well your gaming experience turns out, unless you are planning on putting $1,000 worth of video cards in your computer. A $100 processor, coupled with a $300-400 video card will outperform a $1,000 processor, coupled with a $100 video card.

That said, right now, the best performing processor on the market is the Intel Core 2 Duo. Not any Intel processor, because for the last 4 years or so, Intels have sucked, plain and simple. But, as far as price/performance ratio goes today, nothing beats a Core 2 Duo E6400 or E6600. That includes gaming, and anything else you'll want to do with a computer.

I also advise INTEL, for the reliability of it.
AMD is a little cheaper, a little faster, but also more bleeding edge and has a history of often running too hot, which might end up costing you a lot of aggravation and money, like it did me.
