From the answers given so far Vinegar is best at descaling a kettle as it is stronger than citric acid. However citric acid doesn't smell. A couple of rinses in water and a final boiling will remove the vinegar.

You can use any weak acid. The best is probably citric acid which you can buy as a powder and add to the water. It is a lot more pleasant than vinegar. You can buy packets of descaler, I think most of these are based on citric acid.

You can either use vinegar or we use a de-scalig pooduct called Oust, costs about 99p a go. Neither is particularly expensive but boiling vinegar really smells nasty!

any mild acid should work to remove the limescale so vinegar, or a cheap fresh orange juice or maybe a descaling solution.

Sterident or any other denture cleaning tablets should do the job as they will disolve the calcified sediment.

I would go for the dilute vinegar solution and rinse well afterwards.
