A unit of pain that has been proposed is the dol (from Latin dolor = pain), together with subunits such as the millidol. I remember reading about this many years ago, but cannot recall whether the dol has ever been accurately defined. Perhaps there is a standard dol kept somewhere in an air-conditioned basement in Paris !
