Assume the following data
Price of chicken: $5.00
Price of duck: $7.50
Price of turkey: $15.00

Absolute charts gives the actual number, reflecting the values
Chicken: $5.00
Duck: $7.50
Turkey: $15.00

where relative charts gives the number with respect to a certain value, e.g. taking price of chicken to be 1,
Chicken: 1
Duck: 1.25
Turkey: 3

Where absolute chart gives u the actual value, relative charts allow you to compare the extent of difference between the various categories. As per above example, turkey cost 3 times as much as chicken.

Hope it helps!

Stuff like temperature is measured on relative charts because you can say that 0 is wherever you want it to be.
Stuff like distance is measured in absolute charts because 0 is 0.
