I think it is a free speech issue insofar that everybody should be free to voice their opinions. Those who hold repugnant views should be countered with open and rational discussion, not silenced and driven underground so their views are seen as repressed and therefore glamorous. Light is the best disinfectant.
About what the Sheik actually said. I think it was very revealing. He asked whether if meat was left in an open street, and that cats came and ate the meat, is that the fault of the cats or of who left the meat outside? Obviously in this allegory, women who dress in an un-Islamic fashion are the meat, and men are the cats.
This argument is easy to knock over. Women are not pieces of meat. Men are not cats. A cat would be blameless, a man is a human being and is therefore capable of judgement and restraint. A woman is capable of refusing unwanted sexual advances. We are not animals.
The cleric has put into words what I have always suspected about Islamic dress code. Rather than teach men self restraint and to respect women as they are, it is more simple in some cultures to literally cover up the issue and then blame a woman who shows too much ankle for a man's lack of self restraint.
So to answer the question. No, don't deport Hillali. He has done a service bringing his backward and chauvinistic views into the public field where they can be battled with. Its the only real way we can change hearts and minds on any side.

Yet another Lunatic Muslim Religious Leader shouting his mouth off and insulting the Women of Australia and their Culture , who,s Insulting who now ? a Good opportunity for the Australian women to be "Offended" but I don,t suppose for a Minute they will start Rioting and Burning Mosques down . Screaming and Ranting "Death to the Infidel" . That appears to be "Exclusively" the Prerogative of the Muslims... John -- Kick the Bastard out. Is this the start of Continuous attacks on the Aussie women by these Lunatic Muslim Leaders with their "Our Way or Now Way" ruling. ? ? ?

This is an issue of free speech. The argument is this: some women do dress in order to gain attention, and sometimes the attention is undesirable. I'm not a hardliner, I think its fine for women to dress how they want but you have to admit some women do go too far and also go to places alone which would make them vulnerable.
The cleric should not be deported, if free speech is to be saved.

He is just like so many others around the world! Always trying to change whatever they do not like.
When will they realise that there are places on this planet that already impose their narrow minded restrictions and the best answer for all is for them to go there and live in peace!
We have created our own space and customs, the least we can do is respect others by leaving them to enjoy theirs.
Unhappy with where you are? Move on!

Yes, if he cannot accept the culture in the country he has migrated to, then he should go back to the backward country he came from where women were regarded in that way. No one ever asks for rape. By definition, its not something that one asks for. Such backward people belong in their backward countries.

The problem is that if Australia deport him. He will only say that he was right and that Australia was to afraid to argue with him and threw him out instead. In short, he will become a martyr.
It is better to answer him in an open debate
