Anal retentive. It means someone who is very fussy and just goes crazy about the most minor imperfection. Like the kind of guy who reties his shoe laces 12 times to be sure he has the knot in the middle.

Anal Retentive is supposed to be something like your *** is held shut so tight **** cant come out. So if you are described as Anal, it is meaning you are like tight. Danny Devito, in the film renaisance man, summed up anal in a quote: "Lou, he's 30 seconds late. Talk about anal, you must have been toilet trained at gunpoint" Interesting question, I must admit!!

Freud's Second Stage is called the 'Anal Stage' and that's where it comes from. It lasts from 18 months to 3 years and it means that they are really rigid or uptight and hung up on details etc. Pedantic is a good word.

An old-fashioned concept. If one is fixated at an "oral" level that is considered less evolved than the anal retentive phase. A person who is described in that manner usually is compulsive and overly serious.
