Sharm El Sheikh is situated in the Sinai Peninsular and at one time was nothing more than a desert surrounded by mountains. It is in fact the only part of Egypt that is considered to be in Asia, the remainder of Egypt outside of the Sinai Peninsular is part of Africa. Historically the area was owned by Bedouin tribes who are responsible for the name Sharm El Sheikh which translated means 'Bay of the Leader'.

Because the area was nothing more than desert it has been built specifically for tourism and therefore all the hotels are "resort" hotels with a vast array of facilities and entertainments including nurseries and facilities for people with young children and babies. All the hotel staff here are transported in from cities such as Cairo or Alexandria because other than Bedouin no one lived here permanently before tourism took off.

The local town Neama Bay is safe to visit and again due to the fact that it has been built specifically for tourists has familiar restaurants and bars such as Hard Rock Cafe, Ministry of Sound, Mcdonalds etc etc. You may be subject to annoying shopkeepers plying there trade but they are nothing more than an occasional irritation.

Take advantage of the beaches here as the weather is always hot and the sea always calm with a vast array of coral and tropical fish. If you plan to go on any excursions whilst you are here then make sure that you buy a visa in the arrivals area of Sharm El Sheikh airport. It will cost you ten pounds sterling and you will need it to travel anywhere outside of the Sinai Peninsular, which is not that big, and therefore you may need the visa for boat trips, local shopping trips etc etc.

Above all have a good holiday as I am sure you will find plenty of things to do and enjoy whilst you are here.

My sister went there last november and didn't seem to have any problems with her one year old. There was lots of other guests who were friendly and had children so she mixed with them. The food was also really good.
