It depends which side of the Atlantic you are on, and in Britain it depends a bit on whether you are in England or Scotland.

In Scotland, the division is 7 years of primary school from age 5 to 12, then 4, 5 or 6 years of secondary school. A "High School" is a secondary school which expects hardly anybody to leave after 4 years, only some after 5 years, and a fair proportion of its 6th year pupils to be university material. "Academy" is just another name for the same thing.

English schools sometimes correspond, but there are some local authorities who organise them differently, with "Middle Schools" and/or "Sixth Form Colleges".

High school is the branch between middle school and the real life. It prepares you for college, where exams exist everywhere. Yes, they are the last years of education. In some countries, a 'high school' is a junior college. Imagine an education system.

It is divided into four parts.

Elementary 7-12 yrs>> "Learn your ABC's, make friends"
Middle School 10-13yrs>> starting to have multi-subjects, minor exams. Averages for quarters or semisters are accumalated.
High School 14-18yrs>> Many exams. Averages are accumalated. Begin to start in minor, majors. You can choose what classes you have (in most countries)

College 18-22yrs>> Exams everywhere. Professors with high degrees that teach you how to excel in your degree. After this, its the real life. Your academic life will be over.
