Depends on the flower. If it is a bulb flower such as a tulip, daffodil, lily, etc, use fresh water, cut the ends off before placing it in the water, and no salt. Just water. I also hear rumors to drop a copper penny in the water. I dont know ifg it actually works, but i hear many of my customers say that.
If it is any other type of flower, do the same, cut the ends off. If you live near a flower shop, grocery chain that has a flower shop, ask for a packet of preservative. This generally helps keep the longevity of the non-bulb type flowers. My store gives them out for free. Good luck! :)

salt...no no no....the best thing to do is cut the flower at the bottom of the stem at an angle to get the salt out of it...then add fresh water with a little 7up. Refresh the water and the seven up every morning. It also depends on the flower...roses only last a week or so...carnations last alot longer.

You could put it in fresh water and an "asprin" for good measure. This peps up the flower from stem up and it will remain fresh for awhile. You could also try spraying it with some mild hair spray, setting it and stiffening the petals for some time. This too is a temporary measure and is not permanent. Salt may make it wilt if too strong and eventually it will lose it's will to remain upright and pretty.

cut the stem at least half an inch everyday. the cut should be slanted to allow the flower to get more water. And don't put salt.
