Cynicism, apathy, and ignorance. And what's really sad is that the first two are understandable reactions to politics in this country. It's hard to want to be engaged in politics when it's filled with so much dishonesty and empty rhetoric. Maybe it's always been this way, but being bombarded by it 24/7 through cable news makes it worse. Politicians appeal to the worst in people, not the best. They prey on our fears and prejudices instead of trying to reach us on an intellectual level. They don't want to bring people together; they want to divide and conquer. They want "wedge" issues, and they want to "rally their base." Not to mention the fact that very few politicians are even remotely inspiring. Listening to them talk is like watching paint dry. As we get older we realize that despite all the problems it's still important to try to make a difference, but I don't blame young people at all for finding other ways to spend their time.

The road of political life is very rough, mean and full of potholes - as a result the younger generation feels discouraged in pursuing the political journey. High levels of corruption amongst the political class, unfair means being adopted by them and the failure of the current leadership to inspire the youth and become their role models hasn't also helped the matters.
However, it has to be noticed that the rot sets in at a very young age right from the student elections. The recently announced recommendations by the Lyngdoh Committee in India would be playing a very crucial role in this regard.
Further, the sun rising sectors have attracted the youth and these lucrative career options have pushed their option of joining political life way behind.

I once met a politician (he was running to be Tory leader at the time - he didn't get it) and we were talking about the apparent apathy of most young voters. His comments ran something like this

"A lot of people say 'oh, I'm not that interested, or into politics'. Just wait until they get their first fully taxed paycheque. Then they'll be political"

Most of them (like the rest of the population) don't know enough about what they're voting for to vote. I still think too many people of every age bracket, including the young, vote.
