It was announced on the news this morning that Central Government is going to give more power to local Town Halls.
Is this another way for Local Government to have the power to increase local taxes such as council tax and other charges when it wants to whereas before it had to have permission from Central Government.
Most States in America are run by their Town Hall with the Mayor as head of the state.
Do we really want this, because of the chance of abuse of power, especially if we do not like the local Mayor, and do we really want this country run under any other countries systems.

Yes - the 'American Way' is taking over the whole world, though I think I approve of a certain amount of devolved power to local authorities.

But we now have apartments instead of flats, high schools (and, I believe, even high school proms). Where did the apostrophe go from Hallowe'en? When did trick or treat start? Will we be celebrating Thanksgiving next?

Too much of their telly, mostly crap and all depicting the idyllic American Dream, which is a fantasy not a reality.

We in the UK used to have this kind of local government, until it was slowly taken away from us, now the Government has realised that it is impossible to manage. Mayors are voted in by the LOCAL people, and if WE think they are doing a bad job We can vote them out. To me this seems like a better proposition than some faceless whitehall civil servant making policies without even knowing anything about my region. As for are we becoming more like America well yes obviously, but if the buying public didn't want these products or lifestyles they can choose to avoid them. As a Brit who lived in the US for ten years, I think local is the way to go, I also think we should have local police departments as well. Did you vote in the last election?

I dont know about becoming - I think we have already become too much like America. However in the sense that you mention above I think maybe it wont be a bad thing overall. It used to be like that anyway did it not with County Councils running the show - it was better than it is now with central Gov't nannying everything we do !

no we are not being americanised we are just being taxed, with tax on tax. it is the government who are taking all your money so you just have to eat sleep and work. remember fifteen years ago when you had a private pension for your retirement. well ive still a few years to go and when i took it out, i was promised £18,000.00 a year. now they say id be lucky to get £3,000.00. What has happened to all the money !!!!!!
The u.s. government is in debt to the tune of $$$$9 Trillion yes TRILLION how long will it be before the american people wake up and relize they are the next ENRON telling fukking lies. That debt is equivelent to every American owing $25,000.00 each.
WAKEY WAKEY people something does not add up ??

Well, we're all getting fatter, which is not a good thing since the way the stereotype has always been that we think the americans are fat and they have this concept we all have bad teeth.

America definately is effecting us everywhere, as daft as it sounds, there used to be a time when america tv adverts used to be re-dubbed in english accent for us... not any more...

Also its one of those things, the biggest music hit in america cant help but hit our shores, compared to our Robbie Williams? how many times has HE tried to take america? everytime he doesn't do it.

Slowly but surely, much to my dissapointment, we are becoming americanised. Don't help having a lap dog as a prime minister the the whimsical terrorism of G. Bush.

As long as I can have my cup of tea in the morning and a cigarette in the afternoon I dont mind THAT much.

I want that this British government might focus on the united kingdom and not save on with the U. S. and attempt to make out that we've this actual dating. The BP disaster is the main modern-day component, as we the Brits are getting used as scapegoats, whilst i be attentive to for a fact that different extensive (American) companies have been in contact plus BP isn't completely British in any case. The tying up the Lockerbie bomber and the BP incident is the main modern-day twist or spin interior the story, maximum Brits did no longer choose for him freed besides, yet some unintelligent human beings might blame the completed of the united kingdom. the undeniable fact that we've lost a super form of youthful infantrymen in pointless wars Afghan and Iraq is going to tutor that this u . s . is getting used via the U. S. and that's approximately time, we withdrew them. no person has gained and too many lives have been lost for no longer something, merely greed and lies! i'm getting unwell of listening to approximately some individuals questioning it became super the IRA bombed the united kingdom interior the previous too, any style of terrorist attack on everywhere interior the international is faulty regardless of reason as harmless human beings get killed and injured. that's approximately time, we the united kingdom began to look after ourselves and stopped bowing to the international's super ability, the U. S. isn't a bad undesirable u . s ., yet Obama needs to pay interest on his very own u . s . and would not fairly care approximately us. i appreciate him for that and picture that Cameron and his cronies might desire to do a similar, save friendly, yet end following like a lap canines, it makes us British seem stupid and maximum persons are bored with it, thank you!

The regionalised planning Quangoes are using American PR companies with Americans based in the UK.

It is deliberate policy.

Decentralisation would work against this though.

Please God Noooooo!! We should as a nation stand as one, to keep our ability to use the English language as it should be not dropping letters when it suits us ie, colour - color. Pronunciation why we say "herb" instead of "erb" because it has a bloody H in it. We must also make sure we keep our sense of humour, I propose large scale watching of Monty Python's Flying Circus and a boycott of Friends and Will and Grace. Any other ideas would be graciously accepted...
