just about anything goes these days... just be respectful and do not dress outragous or tacky... if you can afford a simple black dress or skirt w blouse do so, if not just wear something simple that you already have... God bless

Black is the classic representation of muorning. Although now adays it's apporperate to wear bold, dark colors. Go with an outfit you are comfortable in. You are already going to be emotionally uncomfortable, and some funerals can be a long day. I'm not saying wear jogging pants or something like that, but don't restrict yourself to uncomfortable clothing.
Also, I'm sorry for your loss.

You don't have to wear black. You see that in movies because it makes for a more dramatic shot, and it's traditional.
I've always worn (unfortunately, at my school, there was a "curse", every year from the time I was in 5th grade until after my graduation, one of my classmates died) a nice suit or dress, or nice slacks or something. You don't have to wear black, but you may want to stick to darker, more subdued tones.
Younger people a lot of times will wear jeans, and that's acceptable, especially if they're young, and/or the person who died was young.
I would probably stick to something like what most people would wear to church, or a business casual look.
I'm sorry about your friend. You have my sympathy.

I really do not understand why people think Black clothes is the way to go to a funeral. Just be yourself. If you want to wear pink, then wear pink. If you want to wear flaming red, then wear flaming red. If you wanna wear a dress then do so. If you wanna wear pants, then go for it. I think black is boring. Would your friend have wanted you to be boring at his/her funeral? Dress nice (church clothes) But it does not have to be black, just beacaue it's a funeral.

it doesn't matter any more. i would just wear something boring. dark , grey, black ,navy. even if you don't have a bottom. wear those colors for the top. be quiet there, act really serious. stay only 10 minutes and go . you've done your duty. good luck funerals are for kin folks, not us.

you need to be semi dressy to a furneral. Like a skirt, or dress or nice pants & a top. Some people will wear black. You don't have to. It is best to not wear something flashy that draws attention to yourself. It is a time to be reverent and respectful.

i wore a bright blue and green button down w/ black slacks to my dads funeral. I knew he didnt want us to mourn over him, so I wore something half festive to show his zest for life!! wear something that describes the personality of the person.
