The British, they hid the fact from all the politicians that Jinnah is not going to live long. Since there was already factions and difference of opinion, Jinnah wanted to be the PM and Gandhi wanted to make Nehru the PM of free India. Had these politicians known of Jinnah's health, then they would have compromised on the issue of making Jinnah as the Prime Minister of free India. The British played a great role in dividing the country.
This partition of India into three parts i.e. East (now Bangladesh), West Pakistan and India led to so much bloodshed. Immediately after partition, Pakistan along with Baluchis (a tribe) attacked Kashmir since its a strategically located and captured a portion of Kashmir now known as Pakistant Occupied Kashmir (POK).
This partition has led to to war with Pakistan in 1947, 1965, 1971, 1999 (Kargil war) and still there is proxy war waged against India in the name of terrorism, killing innocent people.

I have heard many saying Gandhi is responsible for Partition. Nothing is farther from truth than this statement. In fact, Gandhi was hell bent against portioning the country on communal basis. But for the unimaginative and hasty approach of the other congress leaders and the adamancy of the Muslim League as well the nonchalant attitude of the British rulers, who were in a tearing hurry to get out of the affairs of India, India would not have been partitioned.

I would say that is was Jawaharlal Nehru. When it was being discussed, Mahatma recommended that if Jinnah (Muslim League) was made Prime Minister, there would be no partition. However, this was not liked by Nehru and like minded Congressmen.
Though the British started to divide the nation by religion for their convenience, it was the politicians (not British) who divided the country.
Otherwise, India (India & Pakistan together) could have been a peaceful country.

Obviously Britishers. Before leaving they divided us. One fact i know is that Britishers were agreed to leave India only if "India is divided". And best thing for them was that at that time there were some differences between Hindus and Muslims and both the communities sought as it will help them if we are divided. So our leaders have no choice and they agreed to Britishers decision after all "Freedom from Britishers" was the foremost thing they were fighting for so long.
