I always thought that is was short for "aurora" because they sound similar....but I saw on TV a girl named lorilei was often called "rory"......

It can be a nickname or short for something if you want it to be, but it is a name on its own, it means Red King.

there are a lot of women with the name Rory but this one in particular is Lorelai Leigh Gilmore, better known as Rory, a fictional character from the WB television series Gilmore Girls played by Alexis Bledel

On the show the mother (Lorelai Victoria Gilmore) named her daughter after her. They're both named Lorelai. The daughter's nickname is Rory...short for Lorelai (Lorelai Leigh Gilmore). Gilmore Girls is my favourite show can you tell!
