In reading questions/answers posted, it scares me that so many seem to be so ignorant of using proper grammar and spelling. Don't parents tell their children anymore how important an education is in getting & keeping good paying jobs? It seems to me that the illiterate segment of the population is growing by leaps & bounds. I would be afraid to hire anyone for anything more than selling hamburgers. Don't they want a better life for themselves? Or is it a matter of not wanting to appear smart to friends and so they "dumb down?" It doesn't bode well for the future of our country, does it?

Actually I am just as surprised as you, and there is even a check spelling option for the answers.

Someone high up in government was quoted the other day stating that most high school students now learn most of their spelling and grammar though Microsoft Word (watch for the little squiggles).

It's pretty scary. I have a job that requires me to go through resumes, sometimes as many as 400-600 per job. When you have that many to go through, you don't look for the one to keep, you look for the ones to lose first. No spelling and grammar skills - into the reject pile. It's amazing how the number drops when you do that first.

While the rest of the world is improving their English language skills - we are losing ours.

I have noticed the exact same thing. The grammar is poor & the spelling is incorrect. I don't believe the educational system is doing a very good job. It appears they are looking the other way when it comes to spelling and grammar just to get the students through. Believe it or not, I received a letter from a tenant who was a teacher by profession and at least 4 words were spelled incorrectly in a single 8" x 11" page. It's possible even these teachers are not able to tell if words are spelled correctly because they were never taught the right way themselves. I feel more emphasis should be placed on grammar than there is. There is spellcheck on their computers and they still can't seem to get it right!

No, I do not. I lived a first-rate a long time in an overly small the town in Arkansas. A lot of persons there talk in what can best be viewed a near approximation of English and will slightly spell their possess identify. Most of those persons don't seem to be dull, they only don't situation the identical emphasis on language as others do. I recognise there are people who consider if you do not trouble your self with grammar and spelling there's some thing incorrect with you however all people has their possess ideas approximately what's main in existence. Just in view that some thing is a signal of intelligence or elegance to at least one character does no longer make it so for all people else on this planet - the neatest persons on this planet take delivery of that no longer all people measures themselves with the identical stick. So no, a few persons do not care and a few persons are involved with different matters. People will have to additionally preserve in brain that no longer all people speaking through the written phrase on on-line boards equivalent to this are local English audio system. Some persons are talking/writing English as a moment, 3rd.... language. I best fear approximately a further character's grammar and spelling if it's so deficient that I have problem determining what they're seeking to say.

I feel your pain. Some of the questions on here I can't answer because I feel it's written in another language. I recently went on a job interview and the girl could not pronounce all the words in the questions she was asking me. Then she'd look at me for an answer and what she just said made no sense at all. I had to read the question myself upside down and then give the answer. I am only 37 and she was at least 24. Some things are dumbed down. Isn't the Wall street Journal written at a 10th grade reading level?

actually, you don't need to be a good speller or using proper grammar to have a high paying job. I think employers look for attitude and work history. Even the president of US can't speak proper american english/ and sometimes wrong grammar, and take note he has a speech writer, editor so on and so forth. I don't think he can do his own speech properly without his assistants. Do you have a lot of friends? I mean fun friends except for books and computers.

I was thinking about this too. It's annoying and you know what else all the abbreviations for every word sometimes I can't even figure it out I consider myself a fast reader, but sometimes it takes even longer to figure out what this person is even saying. We live in a lazy country I guess and it seems to be getting lazier as time passes.

Quite frankly I agree, however this is not a homework assignment and many don't care how they type or word phrases. It's just a place for questions to be answered and no hassle. Read the book, "Rich Dad Poor Dad" it may change your outlook on why schooling is not a priority.
