The above answers are correct, but a little more history. Matt Groening (pronounced Graining) is from my home state of Oregon (where we do have a Springfield, but so does every other state). The characters in the Simpsons were named after streets in Portland, OR like Lovejoy and Flanders, Burns, Smithers, etc....I think it is pretty cool since I love the Simpsons. I do like Lisa. I am a little bit like her, my dad's side of the family can be like Homer and Bart and then there's me, little Lisa, voice of reason (the only one with half a brain). Thanks for the question, it was fun!

I believe they were originally a feature on the Tracy Ullman show and as a bumper before movies. Around 1989 it finally became it's own show. I'm more a fan of Homer.

They first appeared on The Tracy Ullman show, and the rest is history. I adore Lisa - nice for girls to have a smart role model!

They started out on the Tracy Ullman show. It was such a big hit they were spun off into their own show.
