The cable being split should screw into the side (area) that has one connection point (it even should indicate which cable to attach where). Then the two (or more) cables feed into the opposite side and should be screwed into the plugs indicated. If you're going to buy a splitter, it should explain the process as well. Good luck

every one i installed was clearly marked, place the incoming cable(the one that comes into your house from the service provider)into the outlet marked incoming,the rest should be marked outgoing they are for your cables from the t.v or stereo, etc.
