Have been prescribed ciprofloxacin for Cystitis..mild. Symptoms seemed to have eased but can the tablets make you feel very sort of spaced out and just feel not too good?

I am not on any other medication of any kind but I worry and I did read all the adverse side effects on the pamphlet and I laid awake half the night to see if I was getting them!

Hi - Ive had these before but I dont remember those side effects. HOwever, you could be feeling 'off' because of the cystitis, I remember THAT feeling well! Give it another day or so and if youre still not sure, maybe call NHS Direct? They can tell you staright away if this is a known side effect or symptom of the infection, or if youve had a bad reaction. Take care! bxx

Ciprofloxacin may cause side effects. Tell your doctor if any of these symptoms are severe or do not go away:

* upset stomach
* vomiting
* stomach pain
* indigestion
* headache
* nervousness
* agitation
* anxiety
* difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep
* nightmares or abnormal dreams

Some side effects can be serious. The following symptoms are uncommon, but if you experience any of them or those mentioned in the SPECIAL PRECAUTIONS section, call your doctor immediately:

* seizures
* vaginal yeast infection
* confusion
* shaking hands that you cannot control
* believing that others want to harm you
* hallucination (seeing things or hearing voices that do not exist)
* depression
* thoughts about dying or killing yourself

You should know that ciprofloxacin has slowed the growth and damaged the joints of young laboratory animals. It is not known if ciprofloxacin has these effects on children. Therefore, ciprofloxacin should not normally be given to children younger than 18 years old. However, if a child has been exposed to anthrax in the air, the benefits of taking ciprofloxacin to prevent this serious illness may be greater than the risk of joint damage. Talk to your child's doctor about the risks of giving ciprofloxacin to your child.

Ciprofloxacin may cause other side effects. Call your doctor if you have any unusual problems while taking this medication.

Here is the websit for this info. I have taken it with no problems at all before. But everyone is different.

If you can understand this you're cleverer than me, ( Wilkpedia)

Metal cations such as aluminium, magnesium, calcium, ferrous sulfate, and zinc are thought to form chelation complexes with fluoroquinolone antibiotics and prevent the drugs from being absorbed. Because of this, avoid taking antacids which contain aluminium, magnesium or calcium with ciprofloxacin. Sucralfate, which has a high aluminium content, also reduces the bioavailability of ciprofloxacin to approximately 4%[3]. Ciprofloxacin may be taken with meals or on an empty stomach. Ciprofloxacin should not be taken with dairy products or calcium-fortified juices alone, but may be taken with a meal that contains these products.[4]

Heavy exercise is discouraged, as achilles tendon rupture has been reported in patients taking ciprofloxacin. Achilles tendon rupture due to ciprofloxacin use is typically associated with renal failure.

The toxicity of drugs that are metabolised by the cytochrome P450 system is enhanced by concomitant use of some quinolones. They may also interact with the GABA A receptor and cause neurological symptoms; this is further augmented by certain non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.[5]

Fluoroquinolones are increasingly contraindicated for patients who have been to S.E. Asia due to the growing prevalance of antibiotic resistance to the class of antibiotics in that region. [6]

Also alcohol can make you feel rough the next day I found when I was taking them. Good luck

hi there !
Ciprofloxacin usually does not create any problems.. It is supposed to be very safe..
Is it that you are on any other medications alongwith this ?
Or you have taken on empty stomach ?
The best thing you can do is :
1. Go through the pamplet obtained along with the tablet strip ! See for "adverse reactions" and "drug interactions"..
2. Take the opinion from your consultant...he is the best judge !

You seem to be very apprehensive ! Relax and take the opinion from your consultant.. Cipro is supposed to be very safe...
wishing you a speedy recovery !

Cipro (Ciprofloxacin) and Avelox (Moxifloxacin). Levaquin gets most of the focus because statistically more people are damaged from it that Cipro or any of the others. There are at least 9 drugs like Levaquin in the Quinolone class that have been approved by the FDA only to be pulled from the market due to unacceptable levels of damaging side effects to patients.

Most people taking Levaquin have no obvious problem with it. But depending on who you talk to, and depending on the symptoms you look for, anywhere from 3%-30% of patients taking Levaquin experience mild to severe side effects.

In my experience, people injured by Levaquin fall into two distinct categories: they either get better in 12 months or less, or they suffer from what appears to be permanent damage, that can be disabling and even continue to get worse.

The most common side effect of Levaquin is Achilles tendon rupture. This means that someone can take even a single dose of Levaquin, potentially experience cramping, anxiety, stiffness and/or pain that night, and when they stand up the next morning, their Achilles tendon literally falls apart. Symptoms can also show up as more mild forms of anxiety, stiffness, and pain.

Levaquin pulls a huge amount of Magnesium from the body (thus causing cramping and spasm, anxiety and claustrophobia), damages mitochondria that manufacture cell energy (thus tendon cells starve and die off in huge numbers allowing tendon to degrade overnight or over time), and can even damage the DNA of connective tissue (such that when new cells grow in they are already damaged, literally you 'heal' bad).

Again, Levaquin helps many many people, but you may want to weigh the pros and cons before taking a prescription, especially if it's for something minor like acne. Yes, people are prescribed this powerful broad spectrum antibiotic for acne! Imagine being 18 years old and being prescribed Levaquin for acne only to get permanent pain and connective tissue damage from it.

I have a word of advice ... after you take antibiotics, take a course of probiotics as they strip those from your gut and you can have all sorts of problems afterwards. I recommend Biocare - not cheap but great.

I have been on Cipro many times (chronic UTI's). I have never had that type of side affect, I would call your doctor or pharmacist ASAP. Good luck!
