Absolutely!!!.You could even run a higher capacity hard drive/disk if you wanted.The "gig" you refer to is simply shorthand for gigabytes which is the storage capacity of the hard drive/disk or your onboard memory etc. You should have no trouble with a "40 gig hardisk".Just follow the instructions supplied with any of your hardware and enjoy the benefits.Remember to upgrade your onboard MEMORY as well.

You'll need to purchase a new 40GB HDD and installed it as a slave drive in your system.

Do take note on the interface of the HDD that your system is using, which I guess will most probably be ATA100/133.

There're quite a few different interface out there in the market:
ATA66/100/133, SATA, SATA2 and eSATA (normally for ext. drives).

Do Not Purchase a Harddisk of different interface from that of your system as it'll not work or rather, you cannot even install it.

Yes, my old P3/600 Gateway Performance had a 100gb HDD in it. My mom still uses that computer and I would put it up against ANY P4 I've seen! :-) It was just a good combination of the right stuff. good luck :-)

yes,you can it. u use 40 to 80 GB HDD in your system but this is only normal hard disk not a SATA. u can use a SATA hard disk with SATA PCI card. your mother board suppoted this.

yes you can, just get the 40GB HD, plug it in your machine, goto setup choose autodetect, when it finds your 40gig HD save & exit.
