We live in Southern california, in the hot dry foothills. We have a half acre of already landscaped/fenced yard (1.5 acres total), two dachshunds and little kids. Specifically, what are the friendliest types of tortoise, and what types would thrive best here. We have mulberry trees, grape vines, dandilion, rosemary, roses, sugarcane, acacia tree, floss silk tree, Avocado, palms, fescue etc in the yard, and would like to feed fresh, local foods, what can they eat from our yard? What else can I plant/feed that grows in my area? What is the best housing, and any other general tips.

there in California is a tortoise rescue organization called the House of Tortuga ( I cant remember what city) they have all kinds of tortoises and turtles and they breed them, they also rescue the native Desert Tortoise and adopt them out, you might want to try to contact them and see about adopting some of our native tortoises, your facilities sound perfect
(we found out about them from a show on the animal planet specifically about the House of Tortuga, we called about adopting
but we live too far away)

Hermann's Tortoises are one of the easiest and friendliest. They grow to a manageable size and are docile and friendly.
