Check the battery connections. If you turn the key and nothing happons, did you try to turn on the lights to see if thy come on?
Noe dont think that if you got lights the battery has eneff voltage to start the car.
You can have all the lights in the world and still not have eneff to turn the starter over.

Check battery cables first, make sure they are tight and clean. It could be a cell going bad in the battery itself. It could be the ignition switch on the column. It could be the neutral safety switch on the automatic transmission. (from AJ)
everybody else is right..but this definetly can be one of it. old cars usually start having problems with the transmission cable. try moving the gear lever to N and P couple of times..it might help..if its not the battery..

It depends on what is going on. When it won't start, do any of the lights work. Do you hear a clicking noise when trying to start. Does the engine turn over and does nothing happen. If none of the lights work, then u could have a poor connection at the battery cable. If it clicks, then you have a possible bad starter...if it turns over just fine....then you probably have a computer control problem.....it just depends on what is going on....need more information to better diagnose.

Neons have a pretty good track record with it's starting system. Since the possibilities of problems is great with any vehicle when it doesn't start, I think yours may just be a bad battery. If it still doesn't start with a boost then I say you have a bad starter.
When you say it doesn't start, do you mean it doesn't crank over? Helps to be more specific. Good Luck!

It sounds like something is not making a connection. It could be anything from a loose battery cable to a bad ignition switch.

Check the battery cables first. It's possible one of them is loose. Next would be the cables that attach to the starter itself.

When this happened to me it was a bad battery or dirty battery connections. Wipe off the outside of your distributor cap with rubbing alcohol while you're at it. Not related, but good to do.

Likely not the battery if it can hold charge. Sounds like a starter solenoid, perhaps affected by cold or damp inthe air.
