If you are a backpacker, the best place in Hanoi is the Hanoi Backpacker's Hostel. In 2004-2005 I spent 8 months traveling through Asia, and this is the only place that stands out to me so much that I would recommend it emphatically.
They were very new when I stayed there. They had clean beds, big, secure lockers, free coffee and tea, free Internet access, a rooftop bar. It was a great place to meet other traveler. The staff was very friendly.
If you aren't a backpacker or you need your own room, this place might not be for you, but you are, you really should check this place out.

I recommend Heritage, though it is closer to West Lake, a 10-15 minutes taxi ride away from the City Center.

Thaison Palace Hotel is the best among with good location, reasonable price and very friendly staff. This hotel is a real 3 star hotel with Inter' standard. My family stayed there for 2 weeks and totally satisfied. From 30 to 50 USD/ night Thaison Palace Hotel will be the best choice for you. Should check real Reviews for any hotels in Hanoi before deciding to book or not ( check reviews from Agoda.com or Expedia.com. Do not trust Reviews on Tripadvisor.com as most of them are fake)

Let's see, I think Parkson Hotel is quiet good, room is not so big and luxury, but anyway very clean and nice. Good location, helpful staff and good price is their plus point. Just from 20usd for a room,as i remember. Should book directly to have a cheaper rate.
