BIOS, in computing, stands for Basic Input/Output System also incorrectly known as Basic Integrated Operating System. BIOS refers to the software code run by a computer when first powered on. The primary function of BIOS is to prepare the machine so other software programs stored on various media (such as hard drives, floppies, and CDs) can load, execute, and assume control of the computer. This process is known as booting up.

BIOS can also be said to be a coded program embedded on a chip that recognises and controls various devices that make up the computer. The term BIOS is specific to personal computer vendors. Among other classes of computers, the generic terms boot monitor, boot loader or boot ROM are commonly used.

BIOS - Basic Input Output Systems

THis is a small memory that reside in the computer which do all the translation between human/device input, into a machine recognizable instruction for execution. Each layer have their own specific functions.

The basic hardware design of a computer consist of a CPU, the memory DRAM and the I/O or Inputs/Outputs, all connected by bridges.

In order for the machine to understand the Input from an instruction enter by keyboard, keypads, scanners or others means, the BIOS have to interpret each action done by the input, translate this to a machine code [bits or binary digits], have the CPU process this, termporarily store the process and result in the meory, let the BIOS know what it have, the BIOS will then process the result to an output where human can recognize the result, either as a screen image in the monitor, print out to the printers, audio from speaker, or set of process to another device.

That is the basic of BIOS.

BIOS is ROM(read only memory) and cannot be changed. When you go into the BIOS at start up, all that can be changed is the order things not the actual programming.

BIOS check for all the input and output devices connected to system. if all goes fine then the it will load the operating system and gives the control to operating system.
