"Pleading the 5th Amendment" Is simply a way of telling the courts that you refuse to say anything that would damage your good name.

Hope this helps!

Text:
No person shall be held to answer for a capital, or otherwise infamous crime, unless on a presentment or indictment of a Grand Jury, except in cases arising in the land or naval forces, or in the Militia, when in actual service in time of War or public danger; nor shall any person be subject for the same offence to be twice put in jeopardy of life or limb; nor shall be compelled in any criminal case to be a witness against himself, nor be deprived of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor shall private property be taken for public use, without just compensation.

Analysis of the several parts:
If they want to try you for a Felony or a crime with the death penalty you must go before a grand jury, Unless you commited the act serving in the armed forces.

If you have been found "Not Guilty" of a crime they cannot try you a second time for that same exact action under the same law.

If you refuse to testify against your self there is no punishment that can be levied against you for that.

In order to be punished for a crime you must go through the court system in the proper order and following the proper channels.

If the Government deems that the best interest of the public would be public ownership of your land they must pay you fair market value for your property.

You can't be compelled by the legal system to incriminate yourself. You have to invoke that right, however. You have to say "I'm taking the 5th," then you have to shut up. If you say it and keep talking, it's void.

You have the right to shut your mouth and cannot be forced to testify aganist yourself. Generally means the person is guilty of something but is not going to give you the ammunition to prove it from their own mouth.
