it depends upo what exactly u want from a city. Portland, OR is very beautiful place both in and around city with moderately fast pace of development. It is close to both the ocean shore, beaches & has good mountain ranges for trekking etc. Downtown is pretty good, big enough still very clean, friendly people & good night life. Anybody visiting Portland, OR for the first time thinks of settling down there......natural feeling. Weather is great, mostly like Seattle....not very warm.....not very cold...u can see in surrounding but city stays clean all the time.It is on I-5, connecting interstate from Vancouver B.C, Seattle, Portland & then california...& on&...on.....:)...so always busy n in highlights.
Las Vegas is one of the fastest growing cities of US....really fast developing. Job industry is a big strength of this amazing city. It offers a lot from entertainment point of view and north of city has good suburbs to raise a family even. Weather is much warmer with cold winters. Well....everybody knows about Las Vegas..so I m not going to explian the type of night life, places to visit etc.
Now, if u r thinking about job growth n development...Las Vegas is the place to go for....but if u r lookign for a calm still beautiful & moderately paced city to live n raise a family.....Portland, Or is the place to go for......hope this helps.......Cheers!

Well I live in Portland and I am planning on moving because they are predicting a huge subduction zone earthquake here within the next 100 years. It is due now and could happen anytime. It will make the New Orleans look like a picnic. They are saying highrises will collapse all over Van BC , Seattle and Portland. It will severely rock and roll for about 10 minutes killing hundreds of thousands. I am looking but I would never live in a hot hell hole like Vegas or Phoenix.
