There are extreme physical differences between the sexes of many fishes. In some fish species the male is a completely different color than the female and males can change from female to male and even back again depending upon population densities and distribution of the sexes. Then the generalities that males have longer fins and are more colorful may be used with some species. BUT, some are so hard to differentiate (like Discus and Angelfish and most salt water fish that even experts find it very difficult to just look at a fish and determine if it is male or female.

Usually the male fish is the more colorful fish. For instance the male guppie has the big beautifulfin, the female dont. Depends on the fish, what type do you have, but the way I have seen it the male is prettier.
