This country was founded on the principle of Government for the people by the people. If the people don't vote, 1/2 of the system is broken. People say "Well I vote for the president, but the other elections are not important, right?" and I say "Who do you think will run for president in the future? Who do you think sits on the electoral college? Who appoints judges who make the laws for the land? Anyone and everyone who is elected into any office can eventually fulfill these roles, that's who."

Remember, the price of freedom is eternal vigilance. That means watching and voting for our officials to be sure that the government is working the way we want it.

Peace!

PS - Incidentally I don't think the loss of the right to complain actually qualifies as a consequence, do you?

Frankly, I think the elected are very satisfied with the number of voters - in fact I have heard city officials say "we don't need a get out the vote campaign, we already have enough voters." Why would they say that? Because they are in office with the current voters - new ones might vote another way.

If you do not vote, then the person you feel is the best candidate may not win, but the big one is if you do not vote then don't complain about how your government is doing because if you don't vote then nobody will tolerate you complaining about a candidate...excercise your right to vote every chance you get...that's what a diplomatic government is all about...aside from this there are n consequences...you have the right to choose whether or not you want to vote, but as stated earlier, if you do not vote, then do NOT complain when your government makes a decision you are against...cheers

instead what are the rewards of not voting ...?
you have virtually no say in who's elected anyway contrary to the mass opinion of the unthinking ... their really is no such thing as not voting technically a none cast vote is recorded as some one
who doesn't vote and assigned a percentage ...this may be subject to interpretation but if the number continues to grow think of the impact of no votes what so ever on the system! may be if the none votes get rebel rights the system could eventually be changed to returning the vote to the people the days of aristocracy are dead and gone... power to the people!
none votes make a statement against ultimatum votes

That depends in what country you are in. Some countries dont find voting compulsory. Here in Australia it is mandatory to vote and if you dont do it you can be fined $200 per "no vote"

A non-representative government.

For example, the current president was elected by only 26% of the eligible voters in the country.

The laws you will have to live by are determined by people without your consent. If you don't mind America becoming so polarized that the elite few live in 'gated communities' and don't want to pay taxes and the poor are forced into their own version of 'gated communities' and cant afford to pay taxes, don't vote. You only have to answer to yourself at the end of your life.... "What could I have done?".....

I have always said that if you don't vote, you have no right to complain about the government or its policies. If you vote, you are at least making an effort to change things (or keep them the same, if that's what you want).

Bush won by 1 electoral vote! He did lose the Majority vote!

There are many races that are decided by one ballot. I have seen it time and time again!

aside from all those who died for the right, aside from those that are disenfranchised, aside from those that fill our prisons (women, minorities, and asylum patients), and yes aside from the families that live on the street (many, many mothers with children),

aside from the lobby groups who buys the $$$$ a plate campaign meals, aside from the local news that covers elections issues in 3 ,minutes average, aside from the middle class being hammered from those below whom of which live pay to pay and mouth to hand and those above whom pay as little as they can of which more can be said, aside from Enron, Kodak, Gm, Ford and the other car Manu, aside too from the Pharmaceutical companies that too claim record profits (as do gas/oil company's), while those who worked all their lives now must decide to eat/heat or pay for meds while on SS.
and yes aside from this and much more not said... what do i think the consequences of not voting... when the "s" hit the fan i hope they (nonvoters) be upfront with their mouth's open crying about all of what's wrong

if all think in the manner you think and not vote, i hope people in politics will realise and start performing better and than no one will mind voting. i think people do not vote now as they do not wish to be part of the system.
