both me and my lover are very very straigh acting and if we were walking in a public place somewere you would never knew that we are a gay couple we both love sports working on cars trucks home improvment and all that fun stuff so not all gay men are fem or act that way and some of the people you think are straigh just might be gay and you would never know it..

don't worry about that. i am what some people call "straight acting" and i cannot stand sports or working on cars or yard work. i hate hunting and alot of other things straight men do. i would much rather do housework and take care of kids. do flower arranging and interior decorating. but i have several friends that have told me that when they first met me they thought i was straight and that they had no idea that iwas gay at all and i usually have to make sure that i am 110% gay. LOL!! but don't worry, the best thing to remember is to be yourself. there is no right or wrong way to act as a gay or straight man. as long as you feel comfortable with the way you carry yourself and act then thats all that matters. if someone else does not like it then it their problem not yours.TTFN.

As with any stereotype, there are MANY aspects to what you're calling "gay" and "straight". How many aspects must one fulfil to not present as a stereotype to you? If someone has more traditionally masculine speech and maneurisms, but doesn't play sports, is that good enough? What if they love football, but also love to cook?

There's no dichotomy to it, except for the one that you and society assign. Because you have a stereotype involved, you're head is going to take every opportunity it can to "Other". All it takes is one little thing, and your prejudices are justified. There's been research on it: you'll notice and better remember those characteristics of someone that support your stereotype whereas you'll fail to notice, and will more likely forget (even if you did notice) those characteristics that challenge it.

The short answer is: moot question. Everyone's an individual.

Uh.. yeah, I guess. The question is hard to answer, since it assumes that all straight males look alike... they're all different too.

All of my good friends are straight, and yet I'm probably the "straightest" as far as stereotypes are concerned.

If you assume that all gay guys meet your expectations, then you will probably never see a counter-example since you will think the gay guys who don't are straight unless you talk to them about sex or romance or something, and how often does that come up with strangers?

I'm always amused by the people who actually tell me that they can always tell who the gay men are. They just can. They can always tell. They know. They tell this to me, who they seem to think is straight. Normally, I'd mention it when it comes up, but if it comes up like this I just smile and nod, and watch everyone who knows me laugh histerically at the person who just made a fool of him-/herself... they usually just keep going on too..

Absolutely , just cos your gay doesn't mean you prance around like a sissy on tippy toes, swinging shoulder bag looking pretty.

You can be as straight as the next guy, play sports and be macho as you like, just cos you swing that way makes no difference to how opposite sex percieve you, as some of the most famous sportspersons are gay and you would never know.

Lighten up, dude! Be yourself and allow others the same. Some men ARE effeminate, but it is natural to them. Some are butch and love sports, that is natural for them. what makes the difference? Just like any other group of people, we have many differences, but it is best to look at what we have in common. Good luck making discoveries through your struggle.

I just act like me and do not try to pretend to be anything, but when people find out that I am gay they are usually surprised because I do not fit their stereotype of a gay guy. You can either accept me for who I am, or not. I really do not care what others think because I live my life for me and not for them.

There are very "masculine" men out there. There are also men who claim to be masculine, but are far from it. Go to a bar. You'll see a few. If you go to a leather bar, you will see a higher concentration of the masculine gay type. But you don't have to be in to leather to be masculine.

My gay friends are such sports fanatics that it drives me crazy.
On the opposite side of the coin, there are some guys who are very effeminate looking but totally heterosexual and THAT also drives me insane!
