Joseph McCarthy and Judge Danforth both subscribed to the 'higher moral standard' of the day by believing in (or appearing to publically support) the hysterical rantings of unsubstantiated claims of heresy, treason and crimes against morality and nature to consolidate their absolute authority.
Both constructed courts of their own creation and corrupted the institution of common law for their own private, political agendas.
Whether it was communing with the Devil or supporting Communism, both McCarthy and Judge Hawthorne and Danforth
used the ignorance of the masses to whip up atmospheres of fear. The benefit of crying 'witch' was land inheritance. Witches were cast in jail and had all possessions confiscated. The benefit of crying "Communist" was a smug, self-righteous feeling of being more "American" than the people accused.

Judge Hawthorne was already dead when McCarthy went on his own personal with hunt. Other than that, no difference.
