The Intel Core 2 Duos are the fastest processors out right now, so I would suggest that as your processor. I will provide benchmarks to prove my point.

Many reputable dealers will help you design the system you want, processor is important, but so is the video card and special features(I came across a game that called for pixel shading?, need a real pro to explain it all. If you aren't too picky most new machines should be okay, but with help from someone who knows their stuff you can fine tune it.

Get the fastest processor & video card you can afford. You can skimp on memory & hard drive speed. Try to get fast DVD & CD read capability so you can load games into your computer in a snap. Also make sure your box has plenty of cooling. Those video cards and processors make a lot of heat.

Apart the price I would be confused to choose between Intel Core Duo and AMD Athlon FX 64X2. The main difference is the price; you'll pay less generally for AMD equivalent to Intel processor. However the technology differs from Intel to AMD and this can make the choice easier depending on your preferences.

When you are ready to buy a new system, go to www.stupidcheapcomputers.net. I buy all of my stuff from them and they have a bunch of systems designed specifically for gaming. They have systems from about $700 and up.
I bought a complete, new system from them with a warranty for LESS than it would cost me to build it myself or order a custom one from the manufacturer. You can use my frequent buyer code: ATX926. That will get an additional 10% discount at checkout.
I have NEVER had any problems with anything that they have sold me and their customer service is outstanding. Those guys blow my mind.
Good luck!
