I think the best definition of the two terms exists in the rules of Athletics.

Walk: At any point of time, atleast one foot must be on ground.

Running: Both feet can be in air at any point of time.

running goes faster, use more muscle and energy. higher impact. if you have joint problem walking must be finer for to exercise than running.
