That would depend on who you are defending. Are you defending the O.J.'s of California or the people from SouthCentral and East LA?

Assistant public defenders probably start in the mid-40s and go to about $100K. A private criminal attorney either makes a great deal or struggles to survive. A very few defend organized crime figures and white collar criminals. The rest defend poor people accused of driving drunk, beating their wives and other low level criminals.
