A few years ago. Sugar and tomato growing town north of Brisbane, pop about 45,000. Prosperous, weather moist tropical. Many families of German origin. Lutheran Church has an unusual facade. Bundaberg Rum Distillery worth a look. Bert Hinkler House is of interest, relates to WW1 flyer, test pilot and long distance flier Hinkler. Also the birthplace of late billiards and snooker champion W. Lindrum and late light opera star G. Moncrieff.
Mechanical harveting of sugar cane was invented by a Bundaberg man and now is used worldwide.

Yes, it's a beautiful old town. Keep your eye out for the huge mural on a wall in the township, the Rum Factory has an excellent tour and there are lots of cheap accomodation... Well worth the trip.

great backpacker destination -heaps of work in smallcrops picking and packing The accommodation is good except be prepared to be working. Most backpacker hostels only accommodate workers, so if you want to see a bit more of the surrounding area alternative accom is a must. More tourists than locals sometimes, very friendly medium-sized coastal city, good beaches and great weather!
