People fear what they don't understand. It's as simple as that. How they were raised or even what they believe in themselves can influence their tolerance to others.

Well, I am tolerant. But I may be the exception, not the rule. It seems that many people feel threatened by anyone different from themselves & become aggressive toward them. I don't know why some people feel so much anger. It doesn't affect me if someone has different beliefs, culture, musical tastes from me. I don't expect the whole world to be like me!
I'm a peace-loving, tolerant, exceedingly polite & politically correct (aka wimpy? tee hee) Canadian who grew up with the concept of the "cultural mosaic" where we respect various cultures living together side by side, not expecting them to "assimilate" or change. Americans subscribe more to the "melting pot" -- whatever you were, you're American now, so be patriotic & change to fit in...So they may tend to be more aggressive, less tolerant...
Just a guess...

No--it's our biology
we are programmed to defend our own.
in this age though, we live side by side with others that were not defined as 'our own' before, and our reflexes kick in.
If space aliens came down to Earth -- we would immediately redefine who 'our own' were and include all races and religions. But unless something that drastic happens, we will to stick to our concepts of who is 'us' and who is 'them'

Nope..we would be too overcrowded. Being an ignorant species we humans are destined to be inhumane. Love and Hate must co-exist for either to exist. Eat or be eaten...

Some people have a drive to be right in everything. It's a competitiveness. So that their choices are right and if you do not agree with them you are wrong.

because it appears that anything different or anyone different from ourselves just isn't right. if it is something we don't believe in we frown down upon it, as do others. it really sucks that life is so unfair. however look at it as a daily challenge.

We only can wish, but as long there are people who are close minded and self-righteous... we really can't get along.
